South Van FC’s men’s team is heading into another VMSL season, and this time the goal is simple: climb out of Division 4.
Last season we came 7th out of 10 teams. That’s not where this club wants to sit. Here’s what’s changing, what a promotion push actually looks like, and why this season matters more than most for a Vancouver soccer club that’s only been playing since 2023.
The Target: Promotion
Division 4 is where South Van FC started, and it’s not where South Van FC is staying. Promotion isn’t a nice-to-have this season. It’s the standard the group has set for itself.
That means results matter differently than they did in year one. Every match now counts as three points toward the table, not just minutes on the pitch. Finishing 7th showed exactly where the gap was: the quality was there on an individual level, but the results didn’t hold up week after week. Closing that gap is the whole point of this season.
Promotion in the VMSL isn’t handed out. It’s earned over a full season of fixtures against clubs that have been established far longer than South Van FC. That’s exactly the kind of test this group wants.
What Went Wrong Last Year (And What We’re Fixing)
7th place in a 10-team division is a disaster, plain and simple. Looking back at last season, talent wasn’t the issue. It was about the details: game management, squad depth late in matches, and turning good performances into results on the scoreboard.
Those are fixable problems, and they’re the ones this coaching staff has spent the offseason working on. Fitness, structure, and depth come first, everything else is built on top of that.
What’s Different This Year
The biggest shift heading into this season is the squad itself. South Van FC brought in new signings over the offseason, adding depth and competition for places across the pitch. That competition matters. When every spot has to be earned in training, it raises the level for everyone on the roster. A thin squad is usually how you lose points late in the season, and this group was built with that in mind.
The academy-to-first-team pathway still matters for where this club is headed long term. South Van FC is one of the few VMSL clubs with a direct line from youth development into the competitive men’s side, and that pipeline keeps growing as the academy matures. It’s a slower way to build a squad than simply recruiting established adult players, but it’s the model this club is committed to. Long-term, the goal is a men’s team stocked with players who came up through South Van FC’s own system in South Vancouver.
None of that means anything without the work. Preseason has been about building the fitness base and identity that carries a squad through a full campaign, not just a strong opening month. VMSL seasons are long, and clubs that fade in the back half of the schedule are usually the ones that cut corners early. South Van FC’s approach this preseason has been to front-load the fitness work so the squad is competing at the same intensity in the final month of the season as it is in the first.
What Promotion Would Actually Mean
Moving up a division isn’t just a line on a table. It changes the level of opposition, the standard of week-to-week competition, and the profile of the club within Vancouver’s soccer scene. For a club that’s only three years old, reaching Division 3 would be a signal that South Van FC’s model works at every level of the club: competitive standards on the men’s side, paired with real player development on the academy side.
It also matters for recruitment. Players considering a trial with South Van FC want to know the club is heading somewhere. A promotion push gives every current and future player something concrete to work toward, not just a season of matches.
